Welcome to the Land of Carmel Art Inspirations At
Immaculate Heart Hermitage – created in the Presence of the Living God,
seeking to show His Divine Beauty through icons, symbols, and photos of God's artwork in creation. These original artworks have been inspired by the Carmelite charism which has been lived and loved since the 13th Century. In the silence and solitude of Mount Carmel, the first Carmelites lived as hermits.
With the bonds of community to strengthen them, the hermits lived close to God and nature, beholding His Beauty and Presence in their surroundings and each other. Pondering the Word of God day and night intensified their sense of all creation telling forth the glory of God.
Throughout the centuries, this intimate experience has been stuttered forth in various expressions of art to tell something of His Divine Beauty.
This fascination with God's Beauty continues to inspire Carmelites to tell something of this Spirit–filled experience.
It can find expression in many ways: song, writings, music, prayer, works of kindness, art, etc. This site presents some of those inspired artworks created by a hermit who looks to the Origins of the Carmelite Order to discover anew the simplicity,
silence and solitude of standing in the Presence of the Living God, as did those first Carmelites on Mount Carmel. The first Icons written by her where those of the three great exemplars of our Order: Our Lady of Mount Carmel, St. Elijah and St. Joseph.
In a desire to tell something of the beauty of Carmel, these inspired artworks have been made available for you to see and purchase. When you purchase any of these art works, it is a contribution to the Immaculate Heart Hermitage Inc., a nonprofit organization
for the purpose of prayer in the Presence of the Living God for the good of all souls by a life of silence, solitude, and simplicity. The proceeds go to housing, food, art supplies, clothing and other needs.
At the Hermitage appropriate sewing tasks are also done upon request. These include such things as the sewing of corporals and purificators for the celebration of the Eucharist.
Know that my prayerful gratitude goes out to you in all your dreams and needs.
In the following sections you can see the Icons, Icon Cards, Holy Cards, Bookmarks, Leaflets, Chaplet of Rachel, Stations of the Cross, etc. that are available for your purchase. You can also make personal requests that can format the artwork into greeting cards. Personal greetings inside the cards may also be requested. All cards have a short quote (usually from the Scriptures) on the lower left-hand side. The proposed prices are listed for each item.

An embellished reproduction of an original Icon, which is mounted on wood and measures about 8.5" x 10.5" costs $65
Once an Icon is embellished it takes on a unique appearance and no two look exactly the same.

Icon Cards
The Icon Cards each contain a small quote (usually from the Scriptures) on the inside on the lower left hand side. They are sold in groups of 10 with envelopes to fit. You can buy 10 cards of all the same design, or a variety pack of Icon Cards. The cards measure about 5.5" x 4.25" with pack costing $20. Upon request, the cards can be made into greeting sized cards with a personal message on the inside.

Nature Cards
Fascinated with the many wondrous art works of God in creation these nature cards try to capture a hint of that beauty. They were created from photos taken of God’s artworks. All creation is but a fragment of the beauty of their Creator. Each card contains a short Scripture quote, related to the photo, on the inside lower left corner. They are sold in groups of 10 with envelopes to fit. You can buy 10 cards of all the same design, or a variety pack of Nature Cards. The cards measure about 5.5" x 4.25" with pack costing $20. Upon request, the cards can be made into greeting sized cards with a personal message on the inside.

Leaflets
Each leaflet has the image of one of the original icons printed on the front. Inside you will find an explanation of the symbolism of the icon. The leaflets came to be printed at the request of some friends who were not too familiar with iconography, and wanted to know more about its meaning. Sometimes a prayer or a poem that goes with the icon is included. When folded the leaflet measures about 3-1/4" x 5".

Chaplet of Rachel
The Chaplet of Rachel’s Tears has its’ origin in the pain of parents who have lost a child. Father Leo Hausman of the Rapid City Diocese of SD was approached “about finding something for the parents to help their faith through this tragedy” as he says. After some research, to address this special need, he created a chaplet and named it “The Chaplet of Rachel’s Tears”, also designing a pamphlet to go with it. One mother who had miscarried her child said as she prayed the chaplet she “felt a lot of comfort from it......she felt that these parents (who have lost a child) suffer mostly in silence and that little is given them to work through their grief”, as Father related. The Chaplet was created to help these parents. Both the chaplet and the pamphlet have received the official approval of Bishop Robert Gruss, Bishop of the Rapid City Diocese of South Dakota. These Chaplets are prayerfully crafted at the Immaculate Heart Hermitage using various types of beads but with the same design. You can see some of the completed Chaplets on this web page. The cost of each Chaplet is usually $20.

Stations of the Cross
The Way of the Cross Stations may be purchased as a set of 14 Icons or may be purchased as an individual Station. Each station icon is mounted on wood, measures about 8" x 10" and costs $65. They may also be purchased in booklet form, called The Way of Love, with reflections from St. Titus Brandsma's meditations on the Way of the Cross.
